Question:

If the spouse who handles the finances for a household passes away, how does the surviving spouse manage the bills with only half the social security income?

Answer:

It is not easy having to learn how to pay the bills after one has spent one’s life delegating that duty to one’s spouse.  But, there is a way out.  People only on Social Security income will qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, where one can discharge credit card debt, old IRS debt, and any other unsecured debt.  The bankruptcy code was specifically meant to assist people in this situation. Grieving spouses have been through enough without also having to go it alone and figure out a way to pay all the debt on half the income.
